AFRO-PUNK: A Free Outdoor Screening
James Spooner's groundbreaking and newly remastered 2003 documentary Afro-Punk, the film that sparked a movement, screens outdoors on the plaza at St. Nicolas Park. Director James Spooner will be in attendance to introduce the film, and after the screening he'll be signing and selling copies of his new memoir, It Starts with Anger.
It Starts with Anger tells the story behind the film, how Spooner built the Afropunk movement out of his own anger and alienation, watched it grow into a global brand, and ultimately walked away from it. It's a firsthand account of DIY culture, Black identity in punk and hardcore, and what happens when a subculture gets swallowed by the mainstream.
