Afro-Punk (2003) screening
See the film that sparked a movement—before it disappeared. For one night only, filmmaker James Spooner presents his 2003 documentary Afro-Punk. This award-winning 66-minute DIY film follows four Black punks navigating identity, isolation, and community in a scene that often refused to see them. Built from over 80 interviews across the U.S., it captures a raw moment in punk history—before it was packaged and reshaped. After a brief DVD release, the film was not properly preserved. Screening requests were turned down by the Afropunk company, and it slipped out of circulation. Now, with the rights back in the director’s hands, this screening supports a Kickstarter to restore Afro-Punk for a new generation.
