In 2003 James Spooner released the acclaimed documentary Afro-Punk, uniting and building a previously disjointed community of politically radical young Black people. The unintended result, two decades on, was a multimillion-dollar international brand and a cultural phenomenon, with festivals held annually in New York, Atlanta, and Miami. But just as the company was beginning to blow up, Spooner walked away—never revealing why.

The evening will feature Spooner in discussion with fellow graphic memoirist Mira Jacob and Working Families Party National Director Maurice Mitchell. How have issues of Black identity, representation, and racial solidarity evolved over the last two decades? What can we learn from the AfroPunk movement about resistance now, when the political stakes are higher than ever? FREE
