What is often seen as “American” or “Western” culture is actually Black culture. Black America invented flavor, perfected rhythm, and defined cool. We did all this with no thanks, but that’s not why it happened its just a natural byproduct of who we are. With the cards stacked against us gatekeeping was never an option and although it may be too late to stop the Post Malones of the world from profiting off of it we can never let them forget where it all came from. For years people have tried to make trauma the defining characteristic of what makes Black art when trauma is not what defines the Black experience.
