PANEL 1.

Black MoshPit: How AfroPunk went mainstream.

Description.

In this exciting 40 min slide show, James Spooner, creator of AfroPunk and writer Illustrator of the Graphic Novel "The High Desert: Black Punk Nowhere" tells the story of how he turned his small DIY documentary from underground cult status into an international mainstream festival touting 100,000 attendees a year. He'll discuss the origins story of the film, the early events and the moments when he sold out his punk morals to bring in a larger audience. Finally he'll discuss his breaking point when he left the company,  what the expected underground reaction has been and what he is doing now in comics. This is a capitalist cautionary tale.

Date: Sunday, March 5, 2023

Start time: 11:00 AM

End time: 12:00 PM

Room: 342

PANEL 2.

Spotlight on James Spooner hosted by David Walker

Description: James Spooner is new to comics but his debute graphic novel the High Desert has already put him on the map.  The high desert was named in top ten lists from the Washington Post, New York public Library and Publishers Weekly. It received Kirkus and Pw starred reviews and won the Alex award from the American Librarians association.

The creator of Afro Punk and a life long punk rocker, James has a unique voice. From DiY to mainstream back to DIY, James is poised to articulate the pros and cons of both.  Always willing to demystify the process, James' story is full of the kind transparency any emerging artist will find interesting.  Discussion will include going from zine making to a graphic novel from Harper Collins.  DIY book tours (he has done over 40 book events since May)  and how to make a living at it when everyone says there is no money in comics.  Joined by veteran David Walker, who can fill in all the blanks James still has questions about, this will be a solid discussion.
